Manuel Cargaleiro - cred Kenton Thatcher

Born in 1927 in Vila Velha (
Vila Velha de Ródão) Cargaleiro is a Portuguese artist who creates ceramic and painting. He is an autodidact. Since 1957 lives in France where he was influenced by artists from the École de Paris: Delauny, Vasarely, and Klee. His paintings are based on geometrical modules and primary colors. Awarded with prizes in Portugal, France, and Italy with honors in these countries. In 2004 the artist donated part of his works for the inauguration of the Foundation-Museum, an important center for the art of ceramics.
Currently, he lives and works in Paris.

The majority of works sold at auctions of Cargaleira are auctioned in Portugal (64%) and France (34%), his most popular category at auctions are “Drawings  and Watercolours” followed by Prints, Paintings and a small percentage of other categories (ceramics). Every year works of art of Cargaleiro are sold at auctions with annual revenue ranging from 100.000€-290.000€.
His price-performance aligns with the GLobal Price Artist Index of ArtPrice and because we are talking of a living artist with great quality, artworks exhibited at museums and popular exhibitions probably his prices will go up in the forthcoming years.


In December 2018 at Palacio de Correio Velho his work “La Réverie -Quinta da Silveira”, oil on canvas (130x161 cm) was hammered at 65.000€ his current record at auction. His works go under the gavel quite frequently in Portugal in the last few years: also showing a renewed interest for the artist artworks.
